1. Zohra Sehgal, the Grand Old Lady of Indian Cinema, breathes her last at 102.
- The veteran actress and dancer is one of the few laureates who have
bagged all the three Padma Awards: Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma
Vibhushan.
- The present generation has seen her in movies like Dil Se, Cheeni
Kum, Bend it Like Beckham and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and most recently
in Saawariya (2007).
2. World Bank ranks India as the 10th largest economy in the world in
terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- The top nine countries are: US, China, Japan, Germany, France,
United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia and Italy respectively.
- However, we still remain the poorest country of the G20 with per
capita income at meager $1,499 compared to China's $6,807.
3. Israel-Hamas conflict intensifies; 88 Palestinians killed in recent
Jewish bombardment.
- The low intensity conflict was triggered when Hamas (in Gaza Strip)
kidnapped and killed 3 Israeli teenagers.
- Ever-since the two sides are locked in retaliatory air strikes over
one another.
4. FIFA bans Nigeria from all international football fixtures.
- The extreme step is the result of persistent government meddling in
the affairs of national football governing body Nigeria Football
Federation.
- The government had recently dissolved the NFF, replacing the elected
body with a government appointee.
5. India and Canada inks Audiovisual Co-production Treaty to boost
cultural and business ties.
- This will provide a common platform for film producers on both sides
to collaborate on various aspects of media production.
- It will also boost tourism and jobs creation.
- Indians are the third largest migrants group in Canada currently
amounting to one million.
