1. Sri Lankan batting stalwart Mahela Jayawardene is going to retire
from Test cricket after the completion of the home series against
South Africa and Pakistan.
- He, however, will continue to feature in ODIs.
2. Pakistan declares the ancestral home of veteran Bollywood actor
Dilip Kumar as National Heritage.
- The house, located in Peshawar's Qisa Khawani Bazaar area, will be
converted into a museum.
3. Brazil's national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been sacked after
the disastrous performance of the host team in the recently concluded
FIFA World Cup 2014.
- The 5-time world champion lapsed to a 7-1 loss to eventual champion
Germany in the Semi-Final in its worst defeat in 100-year history.
- Brazil also lost the 3rd place play-off to Holland by 3-0 to
conclude its disgraceful campaign.

5. Noted anti-apartheid literary figure Nadine Gordimer passes away at 90.
- The South African Nobel laureate (in Literature, 1991) penned over
30 books in her illustrious career.
6. The 6th BRICS summit underway in Fortaleza, Brazil.
- Its the annual diplomatic meeting of the 5 major emerging economies
of the world namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
- Argentina is also making its debut as a guest nation here amidst
possibility of inclusion as the sixth member.
- The main agenda of the meeting is the inauguration of the
much-awaited BRICS Development Bank - alternative to the
western-dominated financial institutions IMF and the World Bank.
7. HS Upendra Kamath is the new Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited (TMB).
- He, the former Chairman and MD of Vijaya Bank, succeeds KB Nagendra
Murthy to this post.
