1. Xavi Hernandez, the iconic Spanish midfielder and the backbone of
the famous tiki-taka style of play, retires from International
football.
- He featured in 133 internationals - a national record for any
outfield player - scoring 13 times.
- He is only behind goalkeeper Iker Casillas who is the most capped
player for Spain.
- He had grabbed 'player of the tournament' award at the 2008 Euro Cup.
2. Justice Dr. Manjula Chellur becomes the first woman Chief Justice
of the Calcutta High Court.
- She, prior to this, was the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
3. NASA's Mars 2020 rover mission will be able to extract oxygen from
carbon dioxide present in Mars' atmosphere.
4. Arvind Gupta has been appointed as the deputy National Security Adviser.
- He succeeds Nehchal Sandhu who has resigned recently on personal grounds.
5. Doctors with foreign degrees in India have to qualify a screening
test to be able to begin practice in the country.
- However, the test is not required in the case of five countries
namely US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand provided the student
holds both UG and PG degrees from these countries or PG degree from
these five countries with UG degree already registered with MCI.
6. India's population is expected to surge to 1399.8 million by the
year 2026 as per projection made by the Government.
- World Population Prospect (The 2012 Revision) puts our population
figure at 1620 million as compared to 1385 million of China's by the
year 2050.
