1. Penguin India decides to ban and withdraw Indologist Wendy
Doniger's book "The Hindus: An Alternative History".
- The decision follows an out of court settlement with 'Shiksha Bachao
Andolan' which alleged it hurts the feeling of Hindus and contains
wrong facts.
2. Indian boxers bags 4 medals (A gold, a silver and 2 bronze) to
finish 4th among the twenty-two nations in the 58th Bocskai
International Tournament held in Hungary.
- Gold Medal: L Devendro Singh (49kg)
- Silver Medal: Manoj Kumar (64kg)
- Bronze Medals: Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and Sunil Kumar (57kg)
- The Indian contingent were forced to compete under the International
Boxing Association (AIBA) flag as the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF)
is serving provisional suspension.
3. Konsam Himalay Singh becomes the 1st Lieutenant General in the
Indian Army to hail from the North-East region.
- He, a Major-General prior to this, belongs to 'Charangpat' in
Thoubal district of Manipur.
4. Government mandates all the public transport vehicles plying in
major cities (with a population of over 10 lakh ) to install GPS by 20
February 2014.
- The order will soon expand to include cities even with less than a
million inhabitants.
5. RK Tiwari to take over as new Chairman of Central Board of Direct
Taxes (CBDT) from March 1, 2014.
- He succeeds Sudha Sharma as such who is going to retire a day prior.
6. Jatinder Bir Singh is to succeed DP singh as the next Chairman and
Managing Director of Punjab and Sind Bank.
7. Vinod Sawhny has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer
(CEO) of Reliance Communications (RCom).
- He is going to fill in for Gurdeep Singh
8. The 101st Annual Session of Indian Science Congress (ISC), held at
the University of Jammu, concludes.
- The theme of this annual meet was 'Innovations in Science and
Technology for Inclusive Development'.
