1. India successfully test-fired its 1st indigenous air-to-air missile 'Astra' from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet.

- This comes as a huge relief for the DRDO after the difficult decade-long development phase (marred by several false starts and technical glitches) of this Beyond Visual Range (BVR) weapon.

- Only a few countries like the US, Russia, France and Israel have managed to develop BVR missiles till now.

- The 60-km plus range missile is highly reliable with great Single Shot Kill Probability (SSKP).

2. Darbhanga (Bihar) Nurse 'Martha Dodray' adds another feather in her cap by winning the National Florence Nightingale Award 2014 for her extraordinary work in eradicating polio in the country.

- She had captured the United Nations Foundation award last year (2013) for the same.

- The award carries Rs.50,000 and a merit certificate and is given on the occasion of International Nursing Day (May 12)

- The day is observed in the memory of English social reformer Florence Nightingale, widely considered as the founder of modern nursing.

3. Presidents of Rwanda (Paul Kagame) and South Korea (Park Geun-hye) together with Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim have been honoured with the World Telecommunication and Information Society (WTIS) Award 2014

- They were felicitated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for promoting ICT (information, communication and technology) growth in their countries as a means to achieve sustainable development.

- The WTIS Award, which focuses on broadband connectivity for sustainable development, will this year mark the 149th anniversary of the establishment of ITU May 17, 1865.

4. The French retail giant Carrefour, world’s 2nd largest, decides to shut shops in India amidst hostile political prospect for foreign retail outlets in the country.

- The 76-billion-euro retail chain thus becomes the first foreign retailer to plan an exit from India.

- With many states and the BJP (tipped to form the government at centre) opposing FDI in retail, foreign retailers are left with limited options.

5. Indo-Zimbabwean pair of Sania Mirza and Cara Black grab the women's doubles crown at the Portugal Open.

- They thrashed Czech-Russian pair of Eva Hrdinova and Valeria Solovyeva by 6-4, 6-3 in the final to capture their 1st title of this season.

6. Indian cueist Kamal Chawla settles for a bronze medal having lost to Chuan Leong Thor (Malaysia) in semifinal of the Asian Snooker Championship held at Al Fujairah (UAE).
This is his first medal in Asian Championships.
