1. Rahul Dravid has been elected as the 47th member of Laureus World
Sports Academy.
- The fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket, with this, joins
Steve Waugh and Ian Botham as the fellow panelist.
- The Laureus World Sports Academy is a unique association of 47 of
the greatest living sporting legends from sports as diverse as
football, tennis, athletics, skateboarding and motor racing.
- It employs the Laureus principle of using sport to effect positive
social change by conducting numerous community development initiatives
funded by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
2. Goa is to host the 127th edition of the 'Durand Cup' from October
28 to November 9, 2014.
- Founded in 1888, its the third oldest club cup competition in the
world after the English and Scottish FA cups.
- It is named after its founder Sir Mortimer Durand, a British India's
- Foreign Member of the time, the counterpart of the Foreign Secretary
in London.
- It was initially an exclusive military affair based in Shimla
- The venue was transferred to New Delhi from Shimla in 1940.
Its considered Indian counterpart to the FA Cup in England.
3. Fourth National Awards for 'Technology Innovation in Petrochemical
& Downstream Plastics Processing Industry' presented.
- The awards are conferred by the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers
for technology innovation in the fields of 'Polymer Science'.
- The award consists of a Shield, a Citation and a cash prize of Rs. 2
lakh for the winner while the runner-up gets just the Shield and a
Citation.
- A total of 23 awards under eight categories and three sub-categories
were awarded.
4. Urban population in the country has increased by more than 9 crore
between 2001-11.
- Now 31.1% of the total population live in urban areas as against
just 27.80% in 2001.
- The per capita water supply in Urban Areas is meagre 69 litres as
compared to the prescribed 135 litres
5. The total employment under the unorganized sector stands at 43.7
crore in the country as per the National Sample Survey Organization
latest (2009-2010) report.
6. Sun Pharmaceutical buys out US-based injectable company Pharmalucence Inc.
- The Indian pharmaceutical giant had also acquired Ranbaxy
Laboratories for nearly $3.2 billion earlier this year.
