1. Pro-Russian rebels begin new
major offencive; Ukrainian troops
concedes Luhansk airport.
- The move has come in the wake
of series of gains achieved by
rebels in both the Luhansk and
Donetsk regions, and further
south around the port of
Mariupol.
- Over 2500 people have died
since the outbreak of the hostility
in mid-April.
2. The 9th annual Internet
Governance Forum (IGF) begins in
Istanbul, Turkey.
- The 4-day global meet (2-5
September 2014) will discuss
issues related to Internet policy
and governance.
- The overarching theme for the
meeting is: "Connecting
Continents for Enhanced
Multistakeholder Internet
Governance".
- Its purpose is to support the
United Nations Secretary-General
in carrying out the mandate from
the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) with
regard to convening a new forum
for multi-stakeholder policy
dialogue - the Internet
Governance Forum (IGF).
3. Himachal Pradesh High Court
bans religious sacrifice of animals
at all places of public worship
across the state.
4. Government set to replace the
'Motor Vehicles Act 1988' with a
revived "Road Traffic Act".
- The corresponding Bill is
expected to be tabled in the
winter session of Parliament.
- The new-age legislation is
expected be at par with
international Acts in the Road
Sector.
5. P Sathasivam, previous Chief
Justice of India, to be appointed
as the Governor of Kerala.
- The post is lying vacant since the
resignation of Sheila Dikshit as
such.
- He served as the Chief Justice of
India from 2013-14.
