1. Nobel Prize for medicine 2014 awarded to British-American
researcher John O'Keefe alongwith Norwegian couple, Edvard Moser and
May-Britt Moser for their discovery of the brain's GPS system.
- They revealed the mystery behind how the brain knows where we are
and is able to navigate from one place to another.
2. Madhya Pradesh dislodges Bihar as the fastest growing state in the
country for the year 2013-14.
- Its economy grew by 11.08% in the given period as against the
national GDP growth of 4.7%.
- Bihar - the table-topper for the last few years - has lapsed to the
third spot, with Uttarakhand moving up to second place.
3. Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta becomes first head of state to
attend hearing by International Criminal Court.
- He will do this as a private citizen after temporarily quitting as
the office and handing the charge to his deputy William Ruto.
- He is facing charges of crimes against humanity in a 2007 case where
over 1,000 people were killed in post election violence.
- He is said to have incited the ethnically-motivated carnage that
left some 600,000 uprooted from their homes.
4. Brazil presidential election fails to throw a clear winner; run-off
vote on October 26.
- The incumbent Dilma Rousseff emerged as the leader grabbing the
highest 42% votes.
- She will slug it out with centre-right rival Aecio Neves - who
bagged 34% votes - in the final round of presidential election.
5. Chennai Super Kings clinches 2014 Champions League T20 crown after
beating IPL Champion Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets in the final.
- CSK stormed to victory riding on a brilliant century (in just 59
balls) by Suresh Raina who with this century, became the only player
to score a century in T20 Internationals,IPL and CLT20 tournaments.
- He received Man of the series and Golden Bat while Sunil Narine was
honoured with the Golden Wicket award.
6. India helps Colombo reconnect to Jaffna over rail network.
- The iconic Yal Devi Express resumes its service after some 25-year hiatus
- The train link had been bombed out of operation during the height of
the civil war.
- India has provided help with credit, labour and expertize to rebuild
the system through IRCON - an Indian Railways subsidiary.
7. Novak Djokovic clinches his 5th China Open Men's singles title
after thrashing Czech's Tomas Berdych in a straight set by 6-0, 6-2.
- Russian Maria Sharapova bags the women's singles crown having
defeated Czech Petra Kvitova.
