1. 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics goes to Japanese Isamu Akasaki and
Hiroshi Amano alongwith Shuji Nakamura (US) for their invention of
efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LED) which has enabled bright
and energy-saving white light sources.
2. Dr Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai wins the Lal Bahadur Shastri
National Award for Excellence in Public Administration,Academics and
Management for the year 2014.
- He is currently the Chief Controller of Research and Development in
DRDO and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos
Aerospace.
- He has been the key in the development of various missiles including BrahMos.
- The award given by Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management,
carries five lakh rupees cash prize, a citation and a plaque.
3. India is 18th most desirable destinations to work among G20
countries as per a report published by the consulting giant Boston
Consulting Group.
- What's surprising is the fact that majority of Indians (70-80%) are
themselves willing to go abroad for better work opportunities.
- US tops the table followed by the UK, Canada, Germany and Switzerland.
4. Centre to frame first ever official national policy on mental health.
- October 10 to be observed throughout the country as National Mental
Health Day.
- World Health Organisation has predicted that about 20 percent of
India's population would suffer from some form of mental illness by
2020.
- The country is ill-equipped to handle the same with only about 3,500
psychiatrists available at present.
5. Cyclone Hudhud closing in on Odisha coast; may hit by October 12.
- The cyclonic storm is expected to be the first major natural
calamity to strike the state after the 'Phailin' last October.
