1. India is now the world's second largest textile exporter after China.
- China still maintains a heavy lead over India with its trade volume being almost 7 times as high.
- The data, released by the Apparel Export Promotion Council, states that over 55% of global trade relates to readymade garments.
- Italy, Germany and Bangladesh secured third, fourth and fifth ranks respectively.
- Textiles includes everything from fibre and yarn to fabric, ready-made garments made of cotton, silk, wool and synthetic yarn.
2. India slips to 7th rank, lowest in over a decade, in the foreign direct investment confidence index.
- The index has been topped by the United States for the second year in a row.
- The survey conducted by global consulting firm AT Kearney takes into account the data of 2012.
- Indian could only attract $25.5 billion FDI inflows in 2012 (7th) as against $31.6 billion in 2011 (5th rank).
- This is the lowest ranking for India since 2001.
- India was ranked second for three years in 2005, 2007 and 2012 and was placed on the third spot in 2010.
3. Scientists at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) cloned female buffalo calf, Lalima, using indigenously developed hand-guided cloning technique.
- Lalima, a Murrah buffalo, is the seventh buffalo clone produced by NDRI.
- Murrah is high milk yielding mature buffalo and thus the efforts will go a long way in solving our growing need for milk.
- In this particular technique, somatic cells from an ear of a Murrah buffalo are taken to produce a clone.
- India has the world’s largest population of buffaloes and they contribute about 55 per cent of the total milk production in the country.
