1. Union rural development minister and senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde dies in a road accident on his way to the Delhi airport.

- He, the OBC face of BJP in Maharashtra and an MP from Beed district, was also seen as a prospective CM candidate for Maharashtra for the upcoming assembly election.

- He was the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during 1992-1995.

- He has been the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra during 1995-1999.

- He has also served as the Deputy Leader of the BJP in the Lok Sabha.

2. Palestine finally gets a united government; Rami Hamdallah has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister by President Mahmoud Abbas.

3. Spanish monarch Juan Carlos I to abdicate the throne in favour of his son and Crown Prince Felipe.

- The decision to quit after nearly 40 years on the throne seems to be influenced by his failing health and depleting popularity.

- He is still fondly remembered for ensuring the nation's smooth transition to democracy following the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975.

- He, however, was losing public support recently due to corruption scandals and gaffes involving him and his family.

4. Congress nominates senior leader and former Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge as the Leader of the party in the Lok Sabha.

- He can be the next Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha if the speaker decides to grant him that title.

- Though its uncertain as any party must have at least 55 MPs, 10% cent of the total strength, to earn that status; Congress just have 44.

5. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand G Mahindra becomes the first Indian to receive the prestigious Harvard Medal.

- He was awarded for his dedication, generosity and service to the university.

- He, an alumnus of Harvard, did his graduation and MBA from there.

6. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been appointed as India's Governor on the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank.

- He succeds P Chidambaram for this post which is held by the union Finance Minister of the country.

7. Tapan Sikdar, face of BJP in West Bengal, passes away at 69.

- He was elected to Lok Sabha twice (1998, 1999) from Dum Dum constituency in West Bengal - the only BJP candidate to win from the state then.

- He was a union minister of state for telecom in the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
