1. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan
Yojana set in motion; an
estimated 1.5 crore bank
accounts opened across the
country on the inaugural day.
- The Mega plan seeks to end
financial untouchability from
the face of India by connecting
every household with the
banking system.
- Each bank account opened
before the 2015 Republic day
will offer additional perks like
RuPay debit card, Rs 1 lakh
accident insurance cover, and
an additional Rs. 30,000/- life
insurance cover.
- A competition was held
earlier through the MyGov
Platform asking for entries to
finalize the logo and name.
- Tagline: 'Mera Khata Bhagya
Vidhata'
2. Libyan PM Abdullah al-Thinni
steps down with his entire
cabinet; fresh election likely to
follow.
- The seat of legislature has
had to be shifted to Tobruk in
the far east to escape the
ongoing conflict between rival
militia in capital Tripoli.
- Libya, with all the infighting,
is at the brink of slipping back
into civil war.
3. Centre hikes the minimum
monthly pension to Rs 1,000;
ceiling for maximum wage also
extended to Rs 15,000 for
social security schemes run by
retirement fund manager EPFO
(Employees' Provident Fund
Organisation).
- It will come into effect from
September 1.
- The move is likely to benefit
28 lakh pensioners, including 5
lakh widows, who are
presently getting less than Rs
1000 as pension.
- The hiked limit on maximum
wage will bring 50 lakh
additional formal sector
workers under its ambit.
4. Its 5th 'International Day
against Nuclear Tests' today
(Aug 2014).
- The annual event, in existence
since 2010, seeks to intensify
efforts to make the world free
of nuclear weapons.
