1. 2014 Nobel Prize in chemistry
goes to the American duo of Eric
Betzig and William Moerner
alongwith Stefan Hell from
Germany.
- They bag the coveted award for
the development of super-
resolved fluorescence microscopy
which helps us see finer details
compared to the earlier ones.
2. 'World Post Day 2014' is
celebrated across the globe today
on October 9.
- The day marks the anniversary
of the establishment of the
Universal Postal Union in 1874 in
Bern (Switzerland).
- The Posts in many countries use
the event to introduce or
promote new postal products
and services.
- India has declared the whole
week starting today as the
National Postal Week till October
15.

- Insurance claims settlement will
be given priority on 15th with
intention to bring down
pendency to zero.
3. OECD declares 'Canberra' as the
best place in the world to live.
- Australia also tops the country-
wise ranking with Norway
coming at second.
- The survey featured 362 regions
across 34 countries in the world
for the assessment.
- It employed nine measures of
wellbeing, including income,
education, jobs, safety, health and
environment for the ranking.
4. Anoop Jain clinches the
'Waislitz Global Citizen Award' for
the year 2014.
- The honour recognize his
efforts in founding 'Humanure
Power' (HP) in Bihar which deal
with building community
sanitation facilities across rural
regions.
- The award carried a cash prize
of 100000 US dollar.
5. Pratima Dharm bags another
first; becomes the first Hindu
chaplain at the Georgetown
University (US).
- She will serve the religious
needs of its Hindu students at this
oldest Jesuit and Catholic
university in the country.
- Its notable that she has also
served as the first Hindu chaplain
in the US Army.
6. Union Ministry of Civil Aviation
(MoCA) approves the appointment
of Cramer Ball as Chief Executive
Officer of Jet Airways.
- He, so far, was serving as the
acting CEO after the resignation of
the Gary Kenneth Toomey.
- He now gets a 3-year term as
the full-time CEO till 2017.
7. Nokia pulls plug on its Chennai
phone manufacturing unit.
- The plant, once Nokia's biggest,
is embroiled in a long standing
tax-dispute with the central
government.
- All the operations will be
stopped from the first of
November leaving future of some
6,600 full-time workers uncertain.
- The factory, excluded from the
Microsoft-Nokia deal, has been
acting as a contract manufacturer
for Microsoft.
