1. Khaled Bahah becomes the
new Prime Minister of Yemen.
- His appointment is part of the
recent power-sharing deal
between Houthis (Shia militia)
and the government.
- He was one of the three
candidates proposed by the
Houthi after they rejected the
earlier appointment of Ahmed
Awad bin Mubarak as prime
minister.
2. India gets the 55th rank in the
2014 Global Hunger Index.
- The lower the ranking; the more
food-deprived the country is.
- We have moved 8 places up the
ranking since last year (63rd
rank).
- Mauritius holds the top place
along-with Thailand.
- Albania and Columbia are at 3rd
place while China and Malaysia
are together at 5th.
- Burundi is the most hungry
country followed by Eritrea and
East Timor.
- Around 805 million people still
suffer from hunger globally.
- The report, evaluating 120
developing countries worldwide,
is published by the International
Food Policy Research Institute
(IFPRI).
- Our Neighbours: Pakistan and
Bangladesh (both at 57th), Nepal
(44) and Sri Lanka (39).
3. Richard Flanagan wins Man
Booker Prize 2014 for his book
'The Narrow Road to the Deep
North'.
4. MC Mary Kom is voted as the
Most Valuable Player (MVP) among
India's Asian Games 2014
contingent by contingent
sponsors 'Samsung India'.
5. Gautham Roy is appointed as
the new Managing Director of
Chennai Petroleum Corporation
Ltd (CPCL).
- He replaces AS Basu as such.
- CPCL is a subsidiary of Indian Oil
Corporation.
6. Germany to help India in urban
sanitation programmes; pledges
4 million Euros
- It will also provide technical
assistance with special focus on
enabling effective measures
against discharge of untreated
waste water into surface and
ground water.
- The financial aid will be utilized
in capacity development.
7. 3rd International Tourism Mart
begins in Shillong, Meghalaya.
- Its organized by the Union
Ministry of Tourism in association
with the North Eastern States and
West Bengal with the intent to
promote the tourism potential of
the region in the domestic and
international markets.
