1. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) allows use of
portable electronic devices, such as cellphones and laptops, on
flight/airplane mode in all phases of flight.
- Flyers can now use their devices for any purpose that does not
require active network connection.
- They earlier had to keep such devices switched off through the flight.
2. The Supreme Court constitutes a committee to prevent misuse of
public money by the Government for politically motivated
advertisements in print and electronic media.
- The four-member committee, chaired by NR Madhava Menon, is mandated
to frame guidelines and submit that within three months.
3. Benfica lifts the 33rd Portuguese Football league title by
defeating the Olhanense by 2-0.
- Its their 2nd domestic title after their maiden triumph in 2009-10.
- The victory also has brought an end to FC Porto's three-year run at the top.
4. Indian cueist Chitra Magimairaj clinches World Women's Senior
snooker title after defeating Alena Asmolova of Belarus 3-0 in the
final at the World Snooker championship held at Leeds (UK).
- The former World Billiards champion Chitra has so far bagged three
gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the WLBSA event.

5. World Book and Copyright Day 2014 is observed across the globe on April 23.
- The annual event, in celebration since 1995, aims to raise
importance of books and promote reading, publishing and copyright.

6. India conducts developmental test of supersonic surface-to-air
missile Akash from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) launch complex at
Chandipur.
- The medium range anti-aircraft defence system has a strike range of
25 km and can carry a warhead of 60 kilograms.
- The missile, capable of being launched from static or mobile
platforms, can track and destroy several targets simultaneously.
